Randy Pijoan Biography

Nationally known artist Randy Pijoan, with roots from Northern New Mexico and Central Colorado, has explored numerous corners of our contemporary world. From the vineyards of Tuscany and California to the mountains of Northern Spain and Switzerland, on back roads and desolate terrain of the American west and the crowded streets of Portland and Chicago, Randy has shared his inspiration and perspective with the world through his art for over thirty years.

Randy began with and continues to paint large landscape canvases of scenic and culturally rich northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. His city nocturne paintings have been internationally collected, gaining him recognition as the “premier nightscape painter in the United States”. These images, painted primarily of Chicago and Denver scenes, with oil on large canvases or gouache on board, ultimately gained Randy national notoriety. Randy also founded a new genre of painting called Phrasism that captures a bird’s eye view of the social interactions of people’s lives at the turn of the 21st Century. Busy street corners and intersections or city markets with strong shadows of colorful people and man-made structures fill these canvases. The Phrasist Movement debuted in the Boulder, Colorado art show, “Distilled,” in 2001, featuring international artists who embraced the Phrasist concept of the “here and now,” with no visible horizon line. Pijoan’s Phrasism, nightscape and landscape works have been published, reviewed and documented in national magazines such as: American Artist, Artist, Art & Antiques, Southwest Art, and American Art Collector. Randy started a non-profit fine art facility in San Luis, Colorado in 2007, where as executive director, he volunteered his time every weekend to teach local youth the business of art and process of fine art printmaking. Ventero Open Press served good coffee and espresso to the local community and provided a nice stop for travelers to enjoy looking at art in the gallery while enjoying their coffee. Proceeds from coffee and art sales helped to fund the center and buy art supplies for the youth to use at no cost. VOP was closed in 2017 after Randy suffered a debilitating right-brain stroke in 2016, which left him paralyzed on his left side. He is now recovering and discovering how to best represent his new world from a wheelchair in his studio in Portland, Oregon.
